Sustainable Sushi Logo & Screenprint
2019 Reno Student Addy silver winner in logo design!
TMCC’s F.R.E.E. group (faculty for radical empowerment and enlightenment) aim to encourage people think critically about the world about them. Their campus event is themed each year around different issues that effect our modern world. For the 2019 F.R.E.E. event, my printing class produced t-shirt designs centered around their theme of food and our relationship to it.
I chose to focus on sustainability of food, and the impact of demand. Sushi is incredibly popular- the demand for it has far outpaced many fish populations, with species like the bluefish tuna now endangered due to over harvesting for restaurants. Many sites and apps have recently appeared to help with more ethical consumption of sushi- teaching concerned consumers how to recognize fish species in rolls that are being hurt by demand.
To express this, I wanted to visually associate an ordinary food like a roll with the concept of development and moving forward- using the seaweed as a middle ground between the recycle symbol and ‘rolling forward’- the cycle behind producing the food we love is easy to forget about, and the goal of movements like sustainable sushi is to see our everyday foods and understand what ramifications could be behind them.
